Poetry Unplugged and more ways to celebrate MLK this weekend

By SCOTT MERVIS, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, January 15, 2020
Nothing against church, school and the like, but Poetry Unplugged, a night of spoken word and music inspired by the life and work of Martin Luther King Jr. on Friday at the August Wilson Center, won’t be quite like that.

“I think it’s a great date night,” poet jessica Care moore says, laughing. “It’s something smart that a guy can bring a girl to and get points for knowing about something culturally relevant. It’s not like a typical Martin Luther King program. It’s hip, it’s interesting, it’s cutting edge. It’s not speeches — it’s poetry, it’s art.”

You can count on that from the Detroit poet, who turned heads in 1995 by winning the televised “It’s Showtime at the Apollo” competition for five ...

Annual Pittsburgh Choral Concerts Celebrate Legacy of Martin Luther King Jr.

By BILL O'DRISCOLL • JAN 17, 2020

Before he became a civil-rights icon, Martin Luther King Jr. was a Baptist reverend. And he was deeply inspired by gospel music. And appropriately, from the start, Let Freedom Sing, Pittsburgh’s annual concert for King’s birthday, has focused on classic and contemporary spirituals.

But that’s never been all it does. This year, the choir performances anchoring the two Let Freedom Sing concerts are complemented by sets by two local hip-hop/soul artists from 1Hood Media, Jacquea Mae and Vic Muthama.

Students join diverse ensemble to sing freedom's praises

Herbert V. R. P. Jones, director of the Pittsburgh Gospel Choir, conducts a combined choir of his singers and area high school students during the seventh annual 'Let Freedom Sing!' event at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pittsburgh's Hill District on Saturday evening. ‘Let Freedom Sing!'

The seventh annual “Let Freedom Sing!” brought together urban and suburban choirs spanning all ages to honor the vision of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr.  Students from McKeesport Area, Norwin, Franklin Regional, Wilkinsburg and Sister Thea Bowman Catholic high schools celebrated their unity and diversity by sharing songs of faith and love with the Pittsburgh Gospel Choir at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Pittsburgh's Hill District on Saturday.

The concert first was perfrormed in 2008 to bridge Pittsburgh's neighborhoods and suburbs with the universal language of music. Children from a spectrum of races and social backgrounds joined seasoned singers to sing gospel selections with lively spirit.

“They say it takes a whole village to raise a child. It has taken all of us — the villagers — to raise the child known as ‘Let Freedom Sing,'” Pittsburgh Gospel Choir director Herbert V. R. P. Jones said. “It is for the vision and dream of one man that we celebrate this weekend. We don't want to keep the dream alive, because when you dream you are asleep. We want to take the dream and make it alive.”

‘Let Freedom Sing!' concert celebrates Dr. King’s dream

Bridging Pittsburgh's racial divide through music and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s inspirational message of togetherness is why Kris Rust helped create the Let Freedom Sing! choral festival six years ago.

“I'm inspired by Dr. King's commitment to lifting up humanity which is common to all people," said Rust, who also serves as the director of choirs at Franklin Regional High School. "The sense that we have to be together and love one another. Dr. King said all that so eloquently in his words and vigorously in his actions. He's a figure in history.”

Rust always holds the free, two-day concert on the Martin Luther King Jr., holiday and has one concert in the City of Pittsburgh and another in a suburb of the Golden Triangle.
